March 4: Dr: John Ohnesorge -- China in the Global Economy: Belt & Road and Beyond --submitted by Larry Larrabee Professor John Ohnesorge of the UW School of Law shared his thoughts on the implications of China’s Belt & Road program as it is likely to effect the economies and politics of various countries in the world, particularly those in South America, Africa and Sri Lanka. Although he admitted that there are conspiracy theories regarding China’s intentions, it is possible that China might exploit “debt traps” that they may have created purposely so as to politically control some of these countries. In these countries, where the deals with China are not transparent, China tends to lend, build and operate the facilities such as ports and mines. Guest speaker starts at 16:17 minutes.
