In an evening where it seemed most of the homosexuals I know were at Kylie Minogue, my little dinner seemed like alternate programming. Earlier in the day I was at a bakery in the Farket. Noticing some slices of Burnt Basque Cheesecake, I asked the woman behind the counter if she had a whole cake. I was hesitating with the purchase because the cheesecake wasn’t as goopy as I would have liked (and is characteristic of a good BBC), but looked fully baked - more like a traditional cheesecake. “Do you like your friends?” The woman asked. “Of course I do.” I responded. “Well then you should get them the cheesecake and not something you can get them anywhere.” Annoyed, I bought the cheesecake. She had no idea how seriously I take entertaining and how I’m not the type to throw a McCain’s pizza in the oven and call it a day. I had already picked up my order of short ribs from J Waldron and started the cooking. I haven’t made short ribs in a couple years, and it’s a dish I love, so I just pulled the recipe from memory. I thought I had some chicken stock in the fridge, but defrosting the bag realized it was the dashi I had made for Udon Noodles a few weeks ago. I tasted it and realized it would work well. I threw the dashi in with fresh pressed apple cider, an abundance of leeks, carrots, grape tomatoes, and garlic. Jamie was the first to arrive, and soon the others came. I poured some Featherstone Onyx - which has become such a favourite in the last year. Bryan and Courtney brought a couple bottles but I didn’t immediately notice what they were. “Oh wow. It’s Pearl Morissette! Thank you so much!” I then realized I had better elevate my wine, so after the Onyx and the Pearl, I took out a Le Clos Jordanne Pinot Noir. It was such a good wine night! • Salad - Blood oranges, Fennell, Napa Cabbage, Pea shoots, Candied walnuts, pomegranate, • Braised Shortrib on a Dear Grain Sourdough Crostini • Roasted carrots on Greek Yoghurt with pistachios and honey • Broccolini • BBC I already have our next dinner in the books!
