Chromosome manipulation and production of tetraploid fish
Clarias gariepinus, one of clarid species are bred artificially and further manipulated using cold shock after fertilization to arrest the mitotic cleavage during cell division; this would induce 2n extra chromosome sets (polyploidy) which will now make the fish to possess 4n, which are tetraploid. Tetraploids have aquacultural importance because they will further be crossed with normal diploids (2n) to produce sterile triploids. This work was carried out in the Fish Biotechnology and Genetics Programme of the National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR), PMB 6006, New-Bussa, Niger state, Nigeria.
