Casa Milà, Barcelona - Ocean waves and fantastic creatures

Our first stop in Barcelona takes us to this masterpiece by Antoni Gaudi. As with all tourist highlights here, it is strongly recommended to buy tickets online in advance. You can select a specific time slot for entry and don't have to queue at the entry for a long time. However, Barcelona is a very popular tourist destination, so don't expect to be alone in this extraordinary building ... The Casa Milà is Antoni Gaudi's most important and last building for a private client, after which he devoted himself to the Sagrada Família Cathedral. It set standards both in terms of technical innovations and through the use of ornament and decoration, and broke with the conventions of its time. The house was built between 1906 and 1912 in the style of "Modernisme" (that is the Catalan Art Nouveau). It was commissioned by the Milà couple, which is why it is called Casa Milà. The family only lived on one floor, the other rooms were rented. The house is popularly known as "La Pedrera" (the quarry). During the construction phase, the raw stones were inserted into the wall and only brought into their curved shape on site. Therefore, it looked as if the workers were working in a quarry. Today the building is also used for exhibitions. We are currently seeing works by the Catalan artist Jaume Plensa there. His sculpture "Flora" stands directly in front of the building, an interesting eye-catcher before we take a closer look at Casa Milà. From the outside, the house is particularly striking because of its massive mass and the uneven facade with many balconies and projections. The six-storey building is based on the forms of nature and doesn't have any right angle. It rests on reinforced concrete columns. The walls have no load-bearing function, so Gaudi was free to design them in curved shapes as a reminiscence of the waves of the sea. Gaudi not only determined the architecture of the house itself, but as well the decorations and ornaments that can be found everywhere in the house. An important design material are wrought iron railings and gratings, which are often found in the house, e.g. on the balcony railings or the entrance doors. The interior is flooded with light. Three large courtyards allow natural daylight into all rooms and corridors. In contrast to the façade, the inner courtyards are designed in colour, which, together with the light, creates a bright and cheerful atmosphere. Together with the ventilation shafts, they as well ensure natural ventilation and cooling of the building, a technique that was unique at the time. An apartment on the 6th floor is originally furnished in the style of the 1920s and can be visited. It has a very modern equipment for that time and gives an interesting insight into the life of that time. The attic, which houses an exhibition of the works of Antoni Gaudi, is also very impressive. We see e.g. a hanging chain model that Gaudi used to construct the Sagrada Família. The attic was originally used as a laundry. With the many red-brown brick arches that span above us, we feel as if we were inside a whale. But the most fascinating part of the whole house is the roof terrace! This is where the chimneys and ventilation shafts of the house end, but these prosaic functions are no longer visible. Gaudi transformed them into fantastic creatures which remind us of demons, monsters or medieval knights. Together with the fantastic panoramic view over Barcelona, a unique picture opens up for us here. And in the distance we see his greatest masterpiece: the Sagrada Familia Cathedral, still under construction after 100 years.
