A spectacular journey up to Xinaliq in Azerbaijan. We travel in an old Lada 4x4 taxi along the rough, wild road to Xinaliq. The highest village in Azerbaijan at 2,350 metres. Xinaliq is a beautiful, remote and very traditional village. With a population of 800 people living a subsistence lifestyle, the village hasn't changed much in hundreds of years and feels a world away from modern Baku. People here live a simple life off the land. It is a wonderful place to stay in a traditional home and experience a different way of life in a beautiful, peaceful, bucolic setting. Yes, Xinaliq is in a spectacular location. Surrounded by snow capped mountains and deep valleys only 25 kilometers from Azerbaijan's northern border with Dagestan, Russia. The trekking opportunities are endless. We spent 2 days there exploring the village and the surrounding hillsides, taking in the dramatic scenery. Our homestay was at Rauf's place. A simple, traditional home with a warm hearted family who made us feel welcome and fed us handsomely.
