Many people struggle with how to communicate in groups and team meetings, especially communication for introverts. Confidence for introverts doesn't come easy. Use the "Three Fives" to make sure you are practicing good group communication skills and adding value to every team meeting. Say something, anything in the first 5 minutes to break the ice with the team. Once you warm up, it will be easier to keep talking. 2. Contribute 5 times during a 1-hour team meeting. Make sure it is a verbal contribution like a question, opinion, or sharing information. That's about once every 10-12 minutes. Group communication skills take practice and you must be deliberate about jumping in. 3. Nonverbally affirm somebody else at the meeting 5 different times. Nod, make eye contact, and make simple vocalizations that show your support (e.g., "Hm. Yeah."). This is not entirely non-verbal but you can stay connected without saying much and appear to be participating even when others are speaking. Good group communication is largely nonverbal. For extroverts, the rules are similar but you want to use them to make sure you don't dominate the discussion. 1. Wait 5 minutes before speaking the first time. 2. Speak about five times or once every 10-12 minutes. 3. Nonverbally affirm other speakers at least 5 times during the meeting. If you are contributing about this amount during each meeting, you will be pulling your weight and adding value to the discussion to show good communication in groups.
