(31 Aug 2001) 1. Phil Goff, New Zealand Foreign Minister, shaking hands with Sergio De Mello, Head of the U-N Transitional Administration in East Timor 2. Cutaway 3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Sergio De Mello, Head of the U-N Transitional Administration in East Timor: "I was approached yesterday by Alexander Downer on this question, and we are considering different options and I am consulting. That's all I can say. I am certainly not prepared to make any decisions in a rush. It is far too important, with many implications. We are just considering different options." 4. Cutaway of Goff's official car 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Sergio De Mello, Head of the U-N Transitional Administration in East Timor: "Having a relatively small group, but still hundreds of people in East Timor coming from these countries where they will not be able to return to is not something that we are really looking forward to. There are so many East Timorese who need help, who need employment, need to rebuild their homes, need to put - literally - roofs on their houses, that looking after hundreds of asylum seekers at this point in time is not ideal. But, this being said, we will abide by the principle of humanity and human solidarity. And that is why we are studying different options." 6. De Mello getting into car 7. Car departing STORYLINE: Sergio de Mello, who heads the U-N's Transitional Administration in East Timor said he was reluctant on Friday to be hurried into a decision about accommodating the 438 refugees aboard the Norwegian cargo vessel the Tampa, off Christmas island. Australia has asked United Nations officials on East Timor if they can process the asylum applications of the refugees stranded on the Tampa. De Mello said "I am certainly not prepared to make any decisions in a rush" and added that East Timor is still struggling with its own problems. However, De Mello said that East Timor "will abide by the principle of humanity and human solidarity" and was looking at different options. A spokesman for Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, said the minister has asked De Mello to take the refugees. A number of governments in the Asia-Pacific region, including New Zealand, had also been approached.
