This was not a particularly successful search (we only found 4/7 hides), but it offers an interesting look at odor dynamics. This event was at a Buddhist Church. This search features an suite of offices and a kitchen. Some of the interior walls were thin and delicate as befitting the architecture. Flurry was the first dog in this search area, first thing in the morning. The dogs that ran later, after the odor had settled into the space more, seemed to do better on average. What you see in this video is not obvious at first, but it is a dog that immediately picked up on 2 hides as soon as she entered the search area, but she was never able to locate them. She found other hides along the way, but she remained obsessed with finding those 2 primary hides. The 2 hides in question were in an office that we visited 3 times. But for whatever reason, the odor did not seem to be "available" in the office itself yet. Instead, Flurry was picking up the odor on a hallway that ran down the side of the office. The odor was apparently leaking (pooling?) through the wall off the office into the hallway. During the search I couldn't understand why Flurry kept going back to that hallway, frantically running up and down, but when I got home and watched my video, I finally understood. All she wanted was to find those 2 damn hides. But then when she stepped into the office where they actually were, they seemed to vanish. It was an interesting lesson in how odor can behave in unexpected ways. It makes me appreciate how hard Flurry was working, and also how incredibly challenging that space was--lots of clutter, thin walls, with pooling odor concentrated in the area around the kitchen.
