Libraries have a core value and foundational practice to protect customers' access to information. This program takes you through your rights to information as a library user as well as how libraries work to protect those rights. Emily O'Neal, Technical Services Manager at Deschutes Public Library, explains what libraries do to provide you with access to the information you seek and what happens when those rights are challenged. This program commemorates the 17th annual recognition of Sunshine Week, a national initiative promoting public dialogue about the importance of government transparency and freedom of information. Emily O'Neal is the Technical Services Manager at Deschutes Public Library and Co-Chair for the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Committee. She has been a member of the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Committee since October 2020, and began serving as co-chair for the OIFC for the fiscal year of 2021-2022. Emily relocated to Bend in April of 2016 from Steamboat Springs, Colorado where she was formerly the Technical Services and Collection Management Librarian for Bud Werner Memorial Library. Prior to Colorado, Emily was the Library Operations Manager of Collections for the University of New Mexico. When not managing a Technical Services department, Emily enjoys teaching hip-hop dance or spending time outdoors hiking, snowboarding, rock climbing and paddle boarding with her husband and two dogs.
