As America prepared to inaugurate Donald J. Trump as the 47th president, the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) was proud to host Passing the Baton 2025: Securing America’s Future in an Era of Strategic Competition. This flagship, bipartisan event brought together national security leaders from across the political spectrum to mark the peaceful transfer of power and the bipartisan character of American foreign policy. The online event culminated in a ceremonial passing of the baton session between National Security Advisor-designate for President-elect Trump Michael Waltz and National Security Advisor to President Biden Jake Sullivan, who discussed the critical foreign policy challenges facing the nation. Stephen J. Hadley, former U.S. national security advisor to President George W. Bush, moderated the conversation. Watch other sessions of this event: • Passing the Baton 2025: Securing Amer... Our work helps keep America safe, reducing the risk that the United States will be drawn into costly foreign wars that drive terrorism, criminal gangs and migration. We help make America stronger by projecting U.S. influence and bolstering U.S. allies and alliances in regions destabilized by China and other U.S. adversaries. The Institute provides the U.S. government and those working to end conflict around the world with proven solutions for managing political tensions before they escalate and for supporting peace processes. Across 90 countries, we have partnered with diplomats, military planners and peace brokers that have a stake in building peace, bringing them together to work toward innovative solutions.
