To commemorate our nation's 250th anniversary, the Middletown America 250 Committee launched Revolutionary Reflections — a mini-docuseries exploring the real lives, struggles, and choices of Middletown’s residents during the Revolutionary War. Learn about the families, conflicts, and untold stories that defined Middletown’s role in America’s fight for independence. Our third episode tells the story of Elizabeth “Betty” Dorn. Born into slavery around 1760, Betty witnessed the Revolution firsthand, including the 1776 surprise attack known as the Battle of Navesink. Freed as a young woman, she lived to see the birth of a new nation. Her story reminds us that the Revolution was experienced not only by soldiers and statesmen, but by women, by servants, and by enslaved and formerly enslaved people whose lives unfolded quietly inside the homes and landscapes where history was being made. Betty Dorn’s life invites us to see our past more completely — and to honor the voices that history nearly left behind.
