Continuing their new working relationship with producer Richard L. Daystar, Esquire, the Chyknhawks began working on their 4th LP to later be titled, 'Time Moving Backwards', at Babylon Studios in Los Angeles in late 1966. Now familiar with each other, there was no workflow friction, and beyond the band's normal emotional crashouts and temperamental dust up, progress on the album was quick and fruitful. Like always, the members of the group clashed about who's songs to use on the album, and even more so as singles. Over 30 songs in total were written for the album, with 4 out of 5 members of the band now contributing songs, but 13 were chosen for the LP, including the A-Side to this single which was written by Daniel Bing after he visited London, and stayed with Samuel McHaclameny at # 9 Cavadish St. (Samuel's famous home). As you can imagine, while the two rock stars partied and explored the more avant garde parts of London's nightlife, many substances were taken and many long conversations happened. One of these conversations had Samuel pleading with Daniel to move on from the Chyknhawk's established "Jangle Folk Rock" sound that had made him famous and to really start pushing himself to invent new styles and sounds. This resonated with Daniel to his core, and when sitting in on sessions for the Dodos 1966 album, 'Magic Circles' he was struck with inspiration and grabbed an acoustic guitar and went to an empty room at Cathedral Street Studios where the Dodos were recording and knocked out the basic idea for what would become Mono Colored Rainbows. When he returned and the Chyknhawks began sessions for Time Moving Backwards, Mono was the first song he wanted to start on, as he had a complete vision in his mind of how it should sound. The band pushed back. They thought it was too weird, even for Daniel, but after a fist fight between Gary and Daniel, the band agreed to do it Daniel's way. In the end the band was happy with how it turned out, but assumed it would just be an album track, but Daniel was adamant that it be released as the first single from the LP, to declare to the world, "We have evolved". More fighting. More screaming. In the end, Daniel got his way, and the band's new mission became clear: To innovate just like the Dodos. To not be happy to rest on their laurels. As a concession, Daniel asked Gary to include his song Female Friend (a more traditional sounding Chyknhawks song) on the single as the B-Side. While these bold moves paid off in England (Mono Colored Rainbows reached #4 in the top 100 singles chart), in the US the band's fans were less enthusiastic (the song only reached # 32 on the US Singles chart), but that would all turn around after the release of Magic Circles by the Dodos which lit the world aflame with the new Psychedelic sounds.
