More information about the video content bellow: 1. There is an island in Marshall Islands called the “Bikini Island”. It is used as a nuclear testing site for a United States Program called Operation Crossroads. One popular fan theory suggests that this is the place where Bikini Bottom lies and Spongebob Squarepants and his friends are the result of nuclear radiation. 2. The Marshall Islands provides the world’s largest sanctuary for sharks, which virtually doubled the protected area for sharks worldwide. 3. Elugelab, a Marshallese island, no longer exists – it was blown up by the US Armed Forces in 1952 during a hydrogen bomb test. 4. Majuro is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It’s made up from three main islands called DUD or Dulap-Uliga-Djarrit. During WW2, United States troops invaded, but found that Japanese forces had evacuated their fortifications. A single Japanese warrant officer had been left as a caretaker. With his capture, the islands were secured. WW2 the lagoon became a large forward naval base of operations and was the largest and most active port in the world until the war moved westward when it was supplanted by Ulithi. 5. Before the missionaries came, all Marshallese people were tattooed. The ceremony was extending over a month, most painful and held to confer beauty and bring honor; it was a rite of passage to man or womanhood and was believed the only attribute to be carried beyond the grave; partaking of religion, it served as well to confirm ties of family and birth. Facial tattooing, intended to conceal the wrinkles of age, was reserved for chiefs – to whom was permitted the richest and most widespread adornment. 6. The people follow what the Bible stipulates concerning marriage: the man is the one that moves to be with the woman. But this is mainly because the culture is matrilineal. Therefore, land is passed down from generation to generation through the mother. 7. The Marshall Islands consists of 1,156 individual islands and islets, but only 29 are inhabited.
