On March 5th, 1983, 77-year-old Anton Emil Zurfluh disappeared from Scio, Oregon, leaving his family with a mystery that has spanned over 40 years. The last time anyone saw him, he was dropping off a bag of money at the nursing home where his terminally ill wife of 50 years was staying. He then drove away in his burgundy 1979 Chevrolet Caprice, with Oregon license plate CSY-864, and vanished completely. This episode begins with an unexpected challenge as our RV breaks down, requiring an emergency parking lot repair before we can even start the search. Once back on the road, we meet with Anton's granddaughters and their family friend. The circumstances of Anton's disappearance are heavy; his son found the house lights on and important documents like passports and bank records left behind, suggesting a planned departure with no intent to return. With his wife's health declining, the family believes Anton may have made the heartbreaking decision to end his life. This case highlights a somber reality: self harm rates are significantly high among older adults, a demographic that often faces immense emotional challenges. Our investigation kicks off on the banks of the Santiam River. Jack, familiar with the area, provides valuable insight into how the river has changed over the decades. The family also shares a tip from a psychic who believed Anton's car was located near a "pile of cars" in the river. Using SARTopo mapping software, we plot out Anton’s last known locations and his typical routes to identify high-probability search areas. We also discuss other potential locations, including Indian Prairie Lake, a spot mentioned by the family that we may investigate in the future. The search itself presents numerous obstacles as we navigate the powerful Santiam River: The Search Area: We begin near the Buell-Miller Boat Ramp, a plausible entry point, and start scanning downstream. The river's course has shifted significantly since 1983, meaning the vehicle could be buried under silt or located on what is now dry land. We use historical satellite data to visualize these changes. Sonar Technology: Using our advanced sonar equipment, we meticulously scan the riverbed. The terrain is challenging, with countless large rocks and submerged trees creating false targets that look like vehicles on the sonar screen. Each potential target must be carefully analyzed to be ruled out. River Conditions: The river's current is strong, and some sections are extremely shallow, forcing us to navigate carefully to avoid damaging our equipment. After clearing the initial stretch, we find ourselves unable to go back upstream against the current, adding another layer of logistical complexity to the search. Despite a thorough search of the most promising locations in this part of the Santiam River, we did not find Anton's 1979 Chevrolet Caprice. While this leg of the journey did not yield the answers we hoped for, we successfully cleared several key areas, bringing the family one step closer to the truth. The case remains open, and our commitment to bringing Anton home is unwavering. We will continue to analyze the information and plan our next steps.
