Goolwa was established in the mid 1800s as a port on the Murray where goods that were shipped down river could be off loaded and transferred to a deep water port. The Goolwa Barrage is part of a series of barrages which were constructed in the 1940s to reduce salinity levels in the lower reaches of the River Murray. At the barrage we went through a lock which lowered the boat to the saltwater at sea level. Birds and fur seals frequent the barrage to feed on the fish that are washed down river. From the barrage we continued south east to the mouth of the Murray River.
