On December 14, 2025, as a winter storm closed in on Grindavík, Iceland, a lone figure was spotted walking up the road toward AfarTV’s camera installations on Þorbjörn Mountain. Moments later, Camera A began shaking violently. Within minutes, the feed went dark. This video captures the final moments of that camera. Sadly, this was not an isolated incident. It follows a troubling pattern of deliberate interference with AfarTV’s operations in Iceland—interference that has directly contributed to the ongoing technical difficulties many of you have noticed with our cameras. AfarTV exists to build a global, ground-based volcano monitoring network—one that supports scientists, researchers, emergency managers, and governments with continuous, real-time observations of some of Earth’s most powerful natural forces. Our mission has always been rooted in education, and public access to science. We want to share the world’s most beautiful and intriguing places—places many people may never have the opportunity to see in person. That is why we choose the highest-quality cameras we can find and include audio whenever possible, to make the experience feel like the closest thing to actually being there. For some time, we have chosen to shield our viewers from the more discouraging aspects of what we’ve been quietly dealing with behind the scenes. However, our audience deserves to understand why we have faced so many challenges keeping these cameras online. This incident marks a turning point—one that has compelled us to speak openly about the situation here in Iceland. Your patience, understanding, and continued support during this difficult period mean more to us than we can adequately express.
