That's right! If you take charge now and make the necessary lifestyle changes needed, you can prevent diabetes from happening in the first place. If you are overweight or obese, you can start by losing a modest amount of weight. Increasing your physical activity and cutting down on your calorie intake is crucial. 1. Lose weight. This may help you prevent or delay Type 2 Diabetes. Even if you lose just 5-7% of your body weight-- that is roughly 10-14lbs for someone who is 200lbs-- can prevent Type 2 Diabetes. This can be achieved by increasing the amount of exercise you get in a day. If you are currently inactive, start by getting 30 minutes, 5 times a week. Some great exercise is walking which is free! You do not need a gym membership or any special place for walking. You can go outside and start right away. Cycling is also a great option especially for those who may have issues with their joints or have diabetic neuropathy-- diminished sensation to their hands and feet. Cycling is a low-impact exercise and therefore great for those with similar issues. Yoga is another exercise that can help lower blood sugar levels and can help with weight loss. It can also help reduce anxiety and depression which is linked to many individuals who have diabetes.
