In June 2020, the world stopped to listen to the voices of others. The Black Lives Matter movement shone a light on the injustice and inequality faced by many Black people; Pride saw the celebration of the achievements and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community; during Refugee Week in the UK, we recognised the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees; throughout Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month we reflected on how GRT communities enrich the vibrancy of life in the UK; and throughout Carers Week we praised the contribution of carers to families and communities across the country. Of course, the important contributions of these diverse communities and individuals to our world are not only worth celebrating in June, but at all times! Yet, taking the time to reflect and listen to the voices of others – while also finding and using our own voices to help support them – is vital if we are to live in an equal, respectful and vibrant global community. Using the powerful medium of spoken word poetry, three of our amazing Student Ambassadors – Rufaro, Beth W and Beth P – have created an original poem, sharing their own perspectives on these topics. In their poem, titled “Use Your Voice”, they use their unique, individual voices to share their own experiences and speak in support of those of others. Have a watch, then why not try writing your own spoken word poem?!
