During our trip to the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, we spent one week on 'Old Providence'. Though the islands are under Colombian control, the English once occupied the island. The locals (Raizals) are descendants of slaves. They speak San Andrés–Providencia Creole – which is based on English, West African languages, and Spanish – and call everything by their Creole names. It sounds a lot like the Creole they speak in Belize. From Old Providence, we made a visit to Crab Cay (Cayo Cangrejo), which is inside the Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Natural Park (Parque Nacional Natural Old Providence McBean Lagoon). It's a small rocky island off the coast in good kayaking distance. We snorkeled around the island once, swam to the lonesome rock and stood on it, then continued snorkeling and paddling. We also paddled to the Three Brothers, which are three rocky islets where the birds nest. You're not allowed to land there. We asked our host Keoma and she said that perhaps if you ask nicely at some office, you might get a permit to got here. But it just smells like birds so better just leave them alone.
