Indian Navy Requirement Indian navy has been the user of Kamov KA naval helicopters from last three decades. It has experience of operating KA-25, KA-28 and the most recent one is KA-31. Indian navy currently operates nine KA-31 helicopters, however need more of such helicopters to fulfil its operational need. Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier IAC Vikrant is already undergoing sea trials and is set to commission in the middle of this year. Besides the Talwar class frigates & Vishakhapatnam class destroyers are also under construction which would require Airborne Early warning helicopters such as KA-31. In the mid of January this year, it was reported that the Indian government is pushing for make in India and many defence deals under buy global category has been put under back burner. Among the list, the Russian Kamov Ka-31 is also there which has raised concern for the Indian Navy. Navy pushing for KA-32 AEW As per the latest update, the Indian Navy (IN) is moving forward with its long-awaited purchase of ten Ka-31 airborne early warning (AEW) helicopters for an estimated $480 million, which will be deployed on two aircraft carriers and a variety of frontline vessels. Navy has requested MOD to quickly rectify deviations in the original tender in order to speed up the procurement of the twin-engine Ka-31s. Out of 10, Four of them will be assigned to the IAC Vikrant and the remaining six AEW helicopters will be used to support four Talwar-class frigates currently under construction and other warships. They can also be operated from Navy’s land bases. E-801M Oko (Eye) airborne electronic warfare radar The main mission of the Ka-31 is a long-range detection of airborne and naval threats. It is fitted with the E-801M Oko (Eye) airborne electronic warfare radar which features a 6x1 meter planar array mounted beneath the fuselage. The radar is folded and stowed beneath the aircraft's fuselage before being lowered into a vertical position, to allow 360º mechanical scanning of the radar once every ten seconds. All four landing gear units are retractable, making space for the movement of the E-801E Oko (eye) surveillance radar's antenna. This helicopter can track targets over much larger horizon than ship's radars. It makes it an important completion for naval task force, whose ships are too small to operate carrier-borne early warning aircraft. The radar can simultaneously track up to 40 airborne or surface threats, and can detect fighter-sized aircraft from a range of 100 - 200 km (depending on the size of the target) and surface ships at a horizon of 200 km from an altitude of 9840 feet. The secure data-link and onboard communication systems have a range of 150 km, at altitudes between 4950 and 11,000 feet. The Indian Navy's Ka-31s are also being fitted out with the Abris GPS featuring a 12-channel receiver. Abris will provide all satellite navigation data. Other systems featured in the Ka-31 helicopter will include navigational equipment for digital terrain maps, ground-proximity warning, obstacle approach warning, auto-navigation of pre-programmed routes, flight stabilization and auto homing onto and landing at the parent carrier/base and information concerning the helicopter's tactical situation. Performance The helicopter is powered by two Klimov turboshafts engine each rated at 2200 hp. It can attain a maximum Speed of 250 km/h, Service Ceiling of 3.5km, range of 600 km and patrol Endurance of 2hrs and 30mins. Indian Navy badly needs these helicopters as there are no indigenous options in this category. China is also operating at least 5 of these helicopters.
