This week on the farm, winter hit hard—and everything seemed to happen at once. We braced for severe cold weather, which meant blanketing all four horses, dealing with frozen water, and navigating one unexpected problem after another. A planned farrier visit had to be cancelled when a nearby field burn made the horses anxious and running. Shortly after, the horses tripped over a hose and snapped a frozen water spigot, leaving us scrambling to restore water in below-freezing temperatures. With help from my father-in-law, we made a temporary fix before calling a plumber for a permanent repair—including adding a shut-off valve at the pump. As high winds threatened falling tree limbs, we even parked our brand-new horse trailer in the paddock for safety—giving the horses plenty to inspect. Snow fell all around us, water froze overnight, and we relied on warm sweet tea and blankets to keep the horses comfortable through the cold. This is real farm life—unpredictable, stressful, and rewarding all at the same time.
