Core Decompression of the Hip for AVN
Here's our technique for a core decompression of the hip for treatment of avascular necrosis (AVN; osteonecrosis) of the femoral head. Bone marrow is harvested from the patient's iliac crest. The marrow is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. These are then combined with other bone graft materials, including calcium sulfate, calcium phosphate, and demineralized bone matrix (DBM). This graft is injected up into the femoral head after the necrotic bone has been cored away. The surgery is performed through a small (3cm) incision in the patient's lateral thigh, which provides access to the femoral head.
