Nikolai Kapustin - Fuga a 2 voci op87 no7 from 7 Polyphonic Pieces for Left Hand (1998) Thomas Ang, piano (This is the first recording made anywhere of this work.) ------------------------------------------------ This finale is a rollicking two-part invention built on various permutations of the subject. Treated both regularly and in inversion (a technique used frequently in this set), it even makes an appearance in an augmented form once. The musical argument here can be divided into several sections: there is a double exposition for the subject, followed by an inverted form whose answer is at the same pitch. An episode follows in which the subject is taken apart and varied repeatedly before the forward motion breaks down. After some beating around the bush the subject returns in stretto (actually a rather strict canon for about three bars) twice, and a coda wraps it all with a headlong pelt into the lower reaches of the piano.
