Traditional Antandroy Tribal Dancing Amongst Stunning Baobabs | Madagascar

The Antandroy tribe are one of the 18 tribal groups of Madagascar. The name "Antandroy" means "people of the thorns" - a reference to the area of arid spiny deserts that they live in. They are traditionally a nomadic tribe, living a subsistence lifestyle. The music of the Antandroy, "Beko", is quite well known and is an essential part of their social and spiritual life. Songs are performed during their major tribal rituals of births, deaths, spirit possessions and healings. These members of the Antandroy tribe performed these songs and dances for us whilst we were staying at Mandrare River Camp amongst the backdrop of baobab trees just outside the village of Ifotaka, in the Androy region of southern Madagascar.
