Mock Heart Attack with Carrollton Regional Medical Center

Have you ever wondered what to do if you or a loved one experiences a heart attack? Carrollton Fire and Carrollton Regional Medical Center recently partnered up to conduct a mock heart attack video to help educate our community on what steps to take if you’re experiencing chest pain symptoms. A heart attack is a medical emergency in which the supply of blood to the heart is suddenly blocked, usually by a blood clot. A lack of blood to the heart may severely damage the heart and can be life threatening. As you will see in this video, chest pain, lightheadedness, dizziness, shortness of breath, sweating, and pain shooting up your left arm are common symptoms of a heart attack. If you believe you or a loved one is experiencing a heart attack, call 911 immediately. 911 will dispatch the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team to your location. In the case of this video, Carrollton Fire showed up to the scene, gave the patient aspirin and nitroglycerin, took his vitals, and determined if he is having a segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A code STEMI is when an artery is completely blocked. If this happens, it is extremely important to get to your nearest hospital with a Cardiac Catheterization Lab, because as they say, time is muscle. “Time is Muscle” is a saying medical professional use meaning the longer you wait to get someone in for treatment, the more damage can occur to the heart muscle. A Cardiac Cath Lab has special imaging equipment used to see the arteries and see how well the blood is flowing to and from the heart. Once EMS determined that this patient was having a STEMI, they then notified Carrollton Regional Medical Center that they were on their way, as this was the closest hospital with a Cardiac Cath Lab. EMS also has the ability to send the hospital the patients electrocardiogram. An electrocardiogram (EKG) records electrical signals in the heart and can detect heart problems. Once EMS arrived to CRMC, the Emergency Medicine team was ready for handoff. Dr. John Pillow and his team discussed the patients medical history, hooked the patient up to a heart monitor, and activated the Cath Lab. The Cath Lab nurse and physician then came to the ED to prep the patient for next steps. Once the patient is in the Cath Lab, Dr. Rishin Shah, a cardiologist, placed a stent in his patients artery. A stent is a tiny tube that will hold the artery permanently open to improve blood flow to the heart muscle and relieve chest pain symptoms. #carrolltonregional #teamcrmc #careclosetohome #carrolltonhealthcare #carrolltondoctor #carrolltonhospital #castlehillshealthcare #castlehillsdoctor #castlehillshospital #carrolltonmedicine #castlehillsmedicine #irvingtx #coppeltx #farmersbranch #CFBISD #hebrontx #planodoctor #friscodoctor #planohealth #friscohealth #lewisvillehealth #surgery #heart #heartattack #chestpain #cardiology #cardiologist #carrolltonems #carrolltonfire #carrolltontx
