On Friday, January 24, 2020, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum commemorated International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The United Nations designated January 27—this year, marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—to remember the six million Jewish victims and millions of other victims of the Holocaust and to help prevent future genocides. During this one-hour ceremony, Auschwitz survivor Ruth Cohen, a Museum volunteer, shared her memories and reflections. The program also featured remarks from Lisa Leff, director of the Museum’s Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, and Her Excellency Karin Olofsdotter, the ambassador of Sweden to the United States. Musical selections included “Ani Ma’amin” (“I Believe”) and “Arvoliko” (“Little Tree”). Holocaust survivor and musician Flory Jagoda wrote “Arvoliko” to memorialize her family murdered in Sarajevo, Bosnia, during the Holocaust. The ceremony also included a names reading by leaders from the military and law enforcement, and an opportunity for Holocaust survivors and members of the diplomatic community to light memorial candles. #WeRemember
