It's bold, rustic, and full of character. In this episode, I dive into the story of Mavrud wine while sipping a 2021 oak barrel-aged vintage from Rumelia Winery, right in the heart of Plovdiv’s Old Town. Tasting notes for me were dark prune, hint of black pepper, a dry finish, and a rich, full body that I'm sure speaks to the region’s ancient terroir. Mavrud runs deep in the Bulgarian wine history, and I chat briefly about the ancient Thracian's impact on how it’s made, aged, and appreciated today. It's definitely a must try when visiting the city, and try out Tam’s House, a cozy wine bar tucked inside one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.
