Queer in the country - all celebrate together a festival in the village | DORFMENSCHEN

Elisa (25) comes from Auen, a village with 200 inhabitants in the Hunsrück region. There, she and her friends put on a festival together with many volunteers. On a meadow between trees, around 600 visitors have been celebrating every summer since 2017. The breakwater in front of the stage is a tree trunk and the disco ball hangs between the trees. It's not a big-city festival - but it still looks hip here, and international bands even travel from Berlin, Belgium and the Netherlands. "We don't have a supermarket here, no stores, we don't even have a cell phone network." That's just how country life often is. Elisa loves her home anyway. And when it's festival time, especially. "As a young person, you wish for something like that, because you see the potential for partying, but events just never serve that as it is in the city." Then the people who have moved away come back and the city dwellers can hardly contain their excitement. It's supposed to be a festival for everyone - open, tolerant and with a political message: pro-democracy. Elisa is queer - she likes women, but also other genders - she doesn't want to be pinned down. She sensed this early on, but she never told anyone about it. "Although it was never a problem for me personally, I was given this feeling that you're straight until you open your mouth and come out." In front of her parents, she was outed without their consent. "That night I was so sad, angry, I partially smashed bottles." To her relief, her parents were very understanding. For now, she's single. She would like to fall in love, but meeting someone suitable in the country is difficult. After graduating from high school, Elisa moved to Mainz "It was already different to wake up from the sound of the streetcar than from the sound of the milking machine." There, the queer community is much larger, but Elisa didn't really feel comfortable. She is constantly overstimulated, everything too much. So right after graduation, she moves back to Auen. Many of her friends still live here, too. "That would really be my dream, to stay here and have my own little house." Elisa wants to fight for an open society. To give people who are disadvantaged space and a voice. At her village festival, everyone who is tolerant is welcome. In addition to the music acts, there will be lectures on right-wing music, exhibitions on fake news and the topic of anger. 50 tickets will be donated to refugees and other people who could not afford the festival.
