In 1857, workers didn't run from the U.S. Army. They buried the building. The Salt Lake Temple took 40 years to construct — hauling two-ton granite blocks 23 miles by ox-drawn wagon, surviving federal seizure threats, burying and rebuilding the foundation from scratch. On April 5th, 1893, the doors opened for a single night. Government officials, business leaders, and clergy from other faiths walked through every room. The next morning, the doors closed. They haven't opened to the general public since. This is the story of what those walls have witnessed — from the moment Brigham Young drove a cane into dry Utah soil in 1847 and announced a temple would be built on that exact spot, to the ongoing renovation that is permanently removing murals that almost no one outside the church has ever seen. What happens inside a building that almost nobody is allowed to enter?
