Basantik Vaman (therapeutic emesis) is a purification therapy primarily used for Kapha-dominant disorders in Basant Ritu(March,April). It involves Deepan-Pachan (digestive stimulation), Ghrit Paan (internal oleation), Vaman (emesis therapy), and Sansarjan Krama (post-therapy diet regimen). ⸻ 1. Deepan-Pachan (दीपन-पाचन) - Digestive Stimulation and Metabolic Correction Before Vaman, Deepan (appetizing drugs) and Pachan (digestive drugs) are administered to enhance digestive fire and prepare the body for therapy. Shloka Reference (Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 2/18) “दीपनानि च पाचनानि च कर्तव्यानि यथासात्म्यम्।” “Deepana and Pachana should be administered according to the patient’s constitution.” Drugs Used for Deepan-Pachan: • Deepana: Pippali, Chitraka, Shunthi, Marich • Pachana: Trikatu (Pippali, Shunthi, Marich), Hingvastak Churna ⸻ 2. Ghrit Paan (घृतपान) - Internal Oleation Therapy Ghrit Paan is the administration of medicated ghee to lubricate internal channels before purification. Shloka Reference (Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 13/12) “स्नेहसंस्कृतमन्नं वा पेयमोषधिसंस्कृतम्।” “One should consume medicated ghee or oleated food before purification.” Types of Ghee Used for Ghrit Paan: • Plain cow ghee • Medicated ghee like Panchtikat Ghrit,Triphala Ghrita etc. ⸻ 3. Vaman Karma (वमन) - Therapeutic Emesis This is the main procedure, where emetic drugs are given to expel excess Kapha through vomiting. Shloka Reference (Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 20/13) “कफप्रधानेषु रोगेषु वमनं स्यात् विशेषतः।” “Vaman is especially useful in diseases caused by Kapha dosha.” Drugs Used for Vaman: • Madanaphala (Randia dumetorum) – Main emetic drug • Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) – Soothing agent • Vacha (Acorus calamus) – Kapha-removing drug • Salt water (Saindhava Lavana + Luke warm water) – Induces vomiting Procedure: 1. Sitting Position: The patient is seated comfortably. 2. Administration of Emetic Drugs: Madanaphala, Yashtimadhu decoction is given. 3. Vaman Stimulation: The patient drinks lukewarm saline water and is encouraged to vomit. 4. Observation: Vomiting is monitored until bile (Pitta) appears, which indicates complete Kapha expulsion. ⸻ 4. Sansarjan Krama (संशोधन कर्म) - Post-Vaman Diet Regimen After Vaman, the digestive fire (Agni) is weak, so a stepwise diet regimen is followed. Shloka Reference (Vagbhata, Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana 18/52) “लङ्घनं स्वेदनं पश्चाद्भोजनं लघु चेष्टितम्।” “After purification, light food and gradual restoration of digestion should be done.” Diet Plan (Gradual Restoration of Agni): 1. Day 1-2: Peeya (Rice gruel with thin consistency) 2. Day 3-4: Vilepi (Thick rice gruel) 3. Day 5-6: Manda (Light rice water) 4. Day 7: Normal diet (Laghu Aahar like Moong Dal, Khichdi) ⸻ Benefits of vaman:- 1. Prevents Seasonal Disorders: Vasantik Vaman helps in expelling accumulated Kapha dosha from winter, preventing allergies, colds, and respiratory issues. 2. Enhances Digestion & Metabolism: It stimulates Agni (digestive fire), improving digestion, reducing Ama (toxins), and preventing metabolic disorders. 3. Boosts Immunity & Vitality: Regular Vaman in healthy individuals strengthens the immune system, enhances energy levels, and promotes longevity. 4. Treats Kapha Disorders: It is highly beneficial in diseases like asthma, bronchitis, obesity, hypothyroidism, and skin disorders by removing excess mucus and toxins. 5. Improves Mental Clarity & Mood: By eliminating Kapha-induced heaviness, it enhances brain function, reduces lethargy, and promotes a clear, active mind.
