http://www.rambam.org.il/Home+Page/ Robotic Surgery is a relatively new field in Israel. For the first time in the country, three children at Rambam Health Care Campus have benefited from this advance. The surgeries were performed during an international professional conference devoted to robotics in urology. A world famous team from the Children's Hospital in Boston, an extension of the Harvard Medical School, participated in the two day conference (29-30.7.13). The Boston team worked together with Rambam's Urology Department team under the direction of Prof. Shimon Meretyk. The three children (ages 2, 4, and 12), all from Northern Israel, suffered from a narrowed ureter—the tubular organ that transfers urine produced in the kidney to the bladder—a common problem that can lead to infections, renal function deterioration, and other complications. The first surgery, performed by the Boston team, lasted almost three hours and was broadcast live to conference participants eager to learn about this pioneering procedure. The other two surgeries were performed by Rambam's Robotics team. Last October, a delegation of Rambam professionals visited Boston Children's hospital for advanced training in robotically assisted pediatric urological surgery. The Haifa delegation was led by Rambam's Dr. David Kakiashvili, Director of Robotic Surgery and Dr. Hanna Admi, Director of Nursing. The team of multi-disciplinary health care professionals included urologists, anesthesiologists, and nurses. The second part of the team's training was completed this week when the expert Boston team visited Rambam. Promotion of Rambam's Pediatric Robotics Program has been made possible through the support of philanthropists Irma and Aaron Spencer, in cooperation with the Adelson Foundation.
