We explore the Hafod Estate and take a look at the landscape and history. The way it looks now is down to Thomas Johnes who moved here in 1783. He fell in love with the landscape and created a series of walks and features to enhance the natural features in what was called the Picturesque style that was popular with the rich gentry at the time. He also re-built the existing mansion but this was destroyed by fire in 1807. The house was re-built again and the family stayed there until shortly after their only daughter died. It changed hands several times, each owner remodelling and extending it until eventually it was so large it became impossible to sustain. The final owner left it unfinished. In 1949 it was stripped for salvage and everything sold, the Forestry Commission bought the land and finding no use for the house demolished it in 1958. It was purchased in 2001 by a charitable trust who have worked to restore the gardens, bridges and walks, and it's now open for everyone to enjoy. In Part 2 we explore some of the estate walks and the site of the old mansion. A beautiful and unusual building, I can't believe it was destroyed. https://www.tate.org.uk/art/archive/i... Also : https://coflein.gov.uk/en/site/5577/d... Category People & Blogs
