WHY IS MY DOCTOR MAKING ME CHANGE MY ALIGNERS EVERY 2 WEEKS INSTEAD OF 1 WEEK? | You ask. I answer. This comment came in earlier this week and I thought it was worth talking about. At my New York City practice, Smile Pop, I have my Invisalign clear aligner patients change their aligners every 1 week. Why? Because based on how I treatment plan and assuming they wear their aligners 20-22 hours per day, the movements I have programmed in each aligner should "work themselves out" in 1 week. However, sometimes patients need to wear their trays for twice as long because the amount of movement programmed in an aligner is 1/2 as much to be "gentler" on the teeth. So let's do some (proper) girl math here - if you have a tray that has half the force programmed in it, in order for you to get the full result of that tray, you have to wear it for twice as long (thus the 2 week aligner changer rather than the typical one). Every doctor treatment plans in their own way.
