Three V/line "N class" locomotives with passenger carriages are seen at night as they pass Little River station, on the Melbourne to Geelong broad gauge train line. The first two trains are running non stop and quickly pass by, while the third train makes a scheduled stop to let passengers off before continuing on its journey. All three trains were running towards Geelong, and passed the station at 7:05pm, 7:15pm and 7:35pm. The N Class diesel locomotives have been operated by V/Line since 1985, and used almost exclusively on passenger train services. Their 2500hp EMD engines easily handle the typical load of between 3 and 8 passenger carriages. The recent gauge conversion of the line between Melbourne and Albury means a small number of N class locomotives will be gauge converted from broad gauge to standard gauge to operate the proposed passenger services on the line.
