MysoreJatti

Bharatnaytam is a language that is an amalgamation of multiple layers of melody, rhythm, emotions, narrative, philosophy, poetry, physical energy, tempo. Beneath all these layers lies the innermost core of the art: a merging of physical energy with spiritual ideals. As put by celebrated Bharatnatyam exponent Dr. T. Balasaraswati, Bharatnatyam is an artistic yoga that reveals the spiritual through the corporeal. It aids a human being to evolve to a dimension higher than the existing spiritual level. The danseuse becomes the character she portrays, as she elevates herself to this spiritual dimension, which the Upanishads call rasa, or raso-vaisya, where she is bliss personified. Today is the day we acknowledge this intense tapasya, several hundred hours of rigid practice and repititive rehearsals done to achieve this spiritual dimension. This achievement through tapasya, and this long immersion in this art form, is termed as an Arangetram. Hence the Arangetram marks the beginning of the art form. To support Jahnavi in this beautiful venture, we have with us, a skilled musical ensemble, with natyanvagam and choreography by Smt. Mamatha Karanth, Vidwan Karthik Hebbar on vocal, Vidwan Shri Narayanswamy on mridangam, Vidwan Jayaram on flute, Vidwan Shri Pranav Dutt on rhythm pad, Vidushri Shri Sumarani on Sitar. ==== During the period of the Mysore Wodeyar kings, there was a tradition to perform the Mysore Jatti in the king's court or in temple premises during festivals. Within the choreography, Jahnavi also prays to Vinayaka, the remover of obstacles. The danseuse also offers salutation to the king, describing his qualities. This dance piece begins with a pushpanjali, where the danseuse offers flowers and seeks blessings of Nataraja, the God of dance. Behold Jahnavi performing a pushpanjali with Mysore Jatti, in raga Hamsadhwani, set to adi-taala.
