You can see that video here for reference: • 2022-08.01 CHVRCHES @ The NorVa (Norfolk, ... I was told the balcony wouldn't be open because the low turnout for the show negated having patrons on the second level. I was disappointed by this but was able to score a spot on the center position of the rail. I considered this a half-win only because the stage was elevated five feet from the ground and I was forced to look up at the performers from my vantage point. I found that really weird and unsettling because I was caught off-guard by this! To compensate for this weird positioning, I shot extra wide with a mild zoom. I tilted my phone upwards rather than lift to eye-level and made sure not to rest my elbows on the rail for support. I've done this during several videos (Interpol and Godspeed You! Black Emperor come quickly to mind) and the end result is always disappointing. On stage were a pair of speakers with blue lighted buttons facing the audience. Because they were in this position, I knew they weren't stage monitors. Maybe they were stage-level speakers as part of a P.A. set-up to distribute sound evenly? I don't know what they were but I think they had a hand in getting me great sound (along with Pinegrove's soundperson, who they brought on tour). Speaking of sound, I couldn't have asked for a better result. I used my small Shure mic and because the show wasn't too loud, was able to capture sound at a reasonable level. Vocals weren't competing with the instruments and the only things I had to do to the sound were run mild High Pass and Compression filters. I did normalize the volume so there'd be a constant level and my software did its magic to maintain those for me. My video shooting goal was to track Evan and switch between Megan and Sam since both flanked him. I unfortunately stuck to Sam's side mostly but made sure to at least switch every now and then. When I did move between sides of the stage, I noticed my phone started angling in my shots. I saw this while reviewing the footage and it gave me flashbacks of the videos shot at The Anthem (here's a Tycho video for reference: • 2022-05.10 Tycho @ The Anthem (Washington,... ). Ugh... Overall, I'm OK with it. I'm glad I got to shoot from this perspective though I'm still waiting for my opportunity to get that perfect balcony shot, a la 9:30 Club. I'm glad to finally have caught Pinegrove, most especially in the hometown! Enjoy...
