Nuclear deal threatened after missile test A UN panel says Iran violated a Security Council resolution in October, by launching a missile capable of delivering nuclear warheads. The US has responded by calling for more sanctions against Tehran. In July, Iran and six world powers, including the US, signed a deal to limit Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. But Iran has said any additional sanctions could threaten the agreement. Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency finished its investigation into Tehran’s nuclear activities on Tuesday, and said it supports the nuclear deal. US defense chief visits Iraq US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter made an unannounced visit to Baghdad on Wednesday. He plans to meet US commanders as well as Iraqi leaders as he looks to expand US assistance to Iraq in the fight to defeat Daesh. Carter has sought to expand the role of other coalition members while redeploying US troops in Iraq to perform more specialised roles. Mexico auctions onshore fields Mexico has auctioned off 25 onshore oil and gas fields. The sale comes after an energy reform bill went into effect last year, allowing private investors to compete for contracts for the first time since 1938. 14 consortiums and 26 individual firms bid on the fields. 22 contracts went to Mexican firms, two of which had formed consortiums with foreign companies. The government hopes investments will total 1.1 billion dollars during the lifetime of the contracts, with 620 million being invested in the first year. ‘Terror’ hoax shuts down Los Angeles schools Los Angeles closed all of its schools after its Board of Education received an email threatening a terror attack. It included the use of explosives, assault rifles and machine guns. The FBI said on Tuesday the letter was a hoax. The New York City school district received the same letter, but decided against closing schools. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the threat couldn’t be taken seriously because it was ‘so generic, so outlandish.’ But the superintendent of the LA Unified School District defended his decision, saying he wouldn’t put the lives of 640-thousand students at risk.
