Rome planned and built a network of roads, so extensive and with such technology as no other civilisation had ever before been able to achieve. In this documentary, Isaac Moreno, a civil engineer, geographer and historian, will take us over the plains of Spain and France, where we shall observe the traces and vestiges of these Roman roads. We will travel through amazing locations in Spain and Italy to understand how these roads were made to overcome mountain ranges, traverse mountains and adapt to the rugged terrain. Along the way, with the help of well-chosen animations and digital images, we shall understand the surprising and advanced techniques that Roman engineers used in their construction. It was a technique practiced throughout the ancient world and then forgotten until our days, and also one that does not correspond with the idea that is presently widely accepted as to what a Roman road was really like. After that we shall travel to learn something of Roman transport methods and technology. We shall discover amazing details about the advanced design, functionality and efficiency of Roman wheeled vehicles. Finally, Isaac Moreno will reflect on the current degree of destruction of Roman roads. He tells of how much they suffered after the disappearance of the empire, but much more after the modern territorial transformations in agriculture and public infrastructure. We shall understand the need and the duty to protect the scarce, yet extraordinary, remains of the legacy that has managed to endure.
