Recently, many surgeons have used intraoperative monitoring (IOM) in spinal surgery to reduce the incidence of postoperative neurological complications, including level of the spinal cord, cauda equina and nerve root. Its importance has been emphasized to prevent an unsuspected and unpleasant neurological deficit after spinal surgery. Surgeons should understand the rationale and clinical basis for IOM to interpret the monitoring alerts and to utilize them for a better surgical outcome.
