A playthrough of Sierra Online's 1988 adventure game for Dos PCs, Police Quest II: The Vengeance. Played in EGA with Adlib sound. (For the sake of being complete, I go through all of the files in the cabinet and the computer, beginning at 13:38. If you aren't interested in that stuff, you can skip ahead to 40:48.) A year has passed since Officer Sonny Bonds helped to take down Jesse Bains' criminal empire in Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel ( • Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Ange... ). In the interim, Bonds has begun dating his favorite prostitute and has received a promotion to homicide detective. Life is good. At least, it is until Sonny learns that Bains has escaped from jail and still harbors one hell of a grudge. With retired highway patrol officer Jim Walls once again at the helm, Police Quest II, like its precursor, is a police procedural that splits its focus between simulation and high-stakes drama. Though the format is similar, PQ2 runs on Sierra's brand new SCI engine. The harsh limitations imposed by the AGI engine that powered the first game have been lifted, and the change enables the sequel to deliver the PC equivalent of a "next gen" experience. It's amazing to think that just a year separates PQ1 from PQ2, and that the games run on similarly specced machines, increased RAM requirements aside. The graphics and sounds are vastly improved. The dialogue is better written, the text parser is less strict, and the puzzles are better constructed. The storyline, though even more ludicrous than last time, is way more entertaining, and the game is generally less frustrating and more fun. Police Quest II: The Vengeance is a great adventure game, and a real high point for the series. In fact, I'd argue that it's one of the best Sierra adventures to come out of the late 80s.
