This sermon emphasizes the necessity of ascribing all glory and praise to the one true God, contrasting His power and character with the impotence of pagan idols. The psalm is structured around a central plea to the people to trust in the Lord and to continue blessing Him while they are alive. [03:16] To God Be the Glory. The psalm begins uniquely by stating, "Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to your name give glory" because of His mercy and truth. [07:46] The Taunt of the Gentiles. The psalm answers the taunt of the enemies ("Where now is their God?") by declaring, "Our God is in heaven; He does whatever he pleases" in accordance with His righteous, faithful, and redemptive purpose. [12:24] The Folly of Idolatry. Idols are scorned because they are merely "the works of men's hands" and are impotent, possessing mouths that do not speak, eyes that do not see, etc. [15:30]. [16:59] We Become What We Worship. The most critical point is that "Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them," meaning that people become spiritually blind and ineffective if they worship false gods. [20:29] Exhortation to Trust. The people (Israel, the House of Aaron, and all who fear the Lord) are given a repeated, threefold command to trust in the Lord [20:49] because He is their help and shield. [21:11] God Has Been Mindful of Us. The Lord will bless those who fear Him, including "both small and great" [24:18], demonstrating the totality and inclusiveness of His care for His people. [27:16] The Earth Given to Man. While the heavens belong to the Lord, He has given the earth to the children of men [29:11], establishing man's dominion and rule over it. [29:56] Praise While Living. Since the dead no longer praise the Lord on earth, the living are exhorted to bless the Lord from this time forth and forever more, urging them to use the time and opportunity they have now [30:30].
