(27 Dec 2013) Scores of protesters gathered in Istanbul's Taksim Square on Friday evening to protest against allegations of corruption and bribery in the government. Police sprayed water cannon and fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd as many chanted for the resignation of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Small, sporadic clashes were taking place in back streets, while the crowd at the main square is expected to swell. In June, Turkey saw widespread anti-government demonstrations that erupted following plans to develop Gezi park. Erdogan is facing mounting accusations of trying to cover up a corruption scandal that has implicated his allies after a prosecutor said he was being prevented from expanding a corruption probe. The prime minister was forced to reshuffle his government this week after three ministers, whose sons were detained as part of the probe, resigned. Erdogan said the probe was part of a wider conspiracy aimed at bringing his government down. But his government has removed police officers from posts and changed police regulations to funnel corruption investigations through top police and judicial officials.
