Hong Kong Protesters Mark One Year After Yuen Long Mob Attack

Protesters gathered at Yoho Mall in Yuen Long, northwest Hong Kong to commemorate the first anniversary of the 721 Yuen Long incident when a mob attacked pro-democracy protesters and others at a nearby train station. A large gang of men wearing white shirts attacked protestors with metal rods and wooden sticks at the Yuen Long train station on July 21, 2019. By the time police arrived, they had fled, leaving blood stains on the platform. 45 people were injured, including a man left in critical condition. Some residents accused police of deliberately failing to intervene during the attack. "The Hong Kong police did nothing, it was obviously collusion between the police and mobs," suggested one protester at the mall. Hong Kong's leader, Carrie Lam, last year dismissed allegations of collusion between the thugs and the police. Another protester insisted the demonstrations weren't going to stop because of China's new national security law. "The spirit of democracy and freedom still exists in Hong Kong and the government can't just stamp it out so easily," he said. This year, police arrived at the commemorative shopping mall protest minutes after participants shouted, "Hong Kong Independence." They erected cordons to disperse people from the mall, conducted bag searches and issued public gathering penalty tickets. Gatherings of over four people are currently prohibited in Hong Kong due to coronavirus restrictions.
