We hosted a Real Talk with Rev. Dr. Soong-Chan Rah, Rev. Sabrina Chan, Sam Lee, and Jen Oyama Murphy to discuss the surge in anti-Asian racism and violence during the pandemic. The Impact Movement continues to proudly stand in solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities to denounce the violence, racism, and xenophobia they experience. Read our panelists' bios below. Rev. Sabrina Chan is the National Director of InterVarsity’s Asian American Ministries. She grew up as a second-generation Cantonese American in Richmond, Virginia, and worked as a computer network engineer after graduating from Rice University. In her 22 years on staff, she has staffed Rice, UT Austin, and Baylor, and served as a ministry team director in Texas and California, and mobilized ministry at community colleges. She leads the AAM team in their work with over 6000 Asian American students and 250 Asian American campus ministers nationwide. Sabrina earned her MA in Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary and was ordained in 2009. She lives in Durham, NC with her husband Kevin and two young children. Sam Lee (he/ him) is 1.5 gen Chinese-American, trauma therapist currently based out of Austin, TX. Sam earned his Mdiv and MACP degree through The Seattle School, and currently resides in Austin, TX with his wife and two kids. Jen Oyama Murphy’s love of a good story led her to Yale University where she received a BA in English. Upon graduation, she felt called to bring individual stories into relationship with The Gospel Story and has worked in the areas of campus and church ministry, lay counseling, and pastoral care since 1989. Over the years, Jennifer has sought a variety of ongoing education and training including graduate classes at The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology and Benedictine University. After completing the Training Certificate and Externship Programs at The Allender Center and becoming a member of Training & Pastoral Care Team, Jennifer took the role of Manager of Leadership Development in 2019. She is responsible for creating and managing systems of pastoral care and leadership development for potential and current leaders at The Allender Center.
