The city was levelled, and 240,000 people were killed and a further 160,000, injured. The greatest natural disaster suffered by China since 1949, devastated lives and property in what was an old centre of industry. Under the leadership of the Central Committee, and supported by soldiers and civilians from across the country, the people of Tangshan undertook a heroic disaster relief and rebuilding effort.
