Hans Oster is one of the most extraordinary and overlooked figures of the entire Second World War. Born in Dresden in 1887, he rose through the ranks of the German military, fought bravely on the Western Front in World War I, and later became Deputy Chief of the Abwehr — Nazi Germany's most powerful military intelligence service. At first, he believed the Nazi regime would restore what the Treaty of Versailles had taken from Germany. He was wrong. And the moment he realized it, he dedicated the rest of his life to destroying the regime from within — at the cost of everything he had. Working in the shadows alongside Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, Colonel General Ludwig Beck, Colonel Henning von Tresckow, and later Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, Oster became the secret architect of the German resistance. He warned foreign governments about Hitler's planned invasions. He built covert networks inside the German army. He supplied the explosives used in multiple assassination attempts on Adolf Hitler. He smuggled Jewish civilians out of Nazi Germany using fake Abwehr credentials. When the July 20th, 1944 assassination plot failed and Hitler survived the Wolf's Lair bombing, the revenge came fast and brutal.
