Dr. R. Taylor Ripley, a professor of surgery in the David J. Sugarbaker Division of Thoracic Surgery at Baylor, explains costal margin reconstruction for Slipping Rib Syndrome. This innovative surgical procedure provides significant relief for patients suffering from the debilitating effects of SRS. Ripley is among the few surgeons in the U.S. performing this technique, having been trained by Dr. Adam Hansen at West Virginia University, who pioneered the method. Slipping rib syndrome is a painful condition where one or more of the lower ribs become hypermobile due to weakened or damaged cartilage. This causes pain and discomfort as the ribs move out of their normal position and press on nerves. If not properly diagnosed and treated, SRS can lead to long-term disability, chronic pain, and a severely impacted quality of life. The previous surgical technique for treating SRS often results in recurring symptoms and the need for additional surgeries. In contrast, the new costal technique has been shown to significantly reduce patients’ pain, decrease the need for pain medications, and potentially minimize the necessity for further surgeries.
