The Adverb (Adverbul) in Romanian In Romanian grammar, an adverb (adverbul) is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs provide more information about how, when, where, or to what extent something happens. Types of Adverbs Adverbs in Romanian can be categorized by the type of information they provide: Adverbs of Manner (Adverbe de mod): These answer the question "How?" (Cum?). bine (well) - El cântă bine. (He sings well.) repede (quickly) - Ea aleargă repede. (She runs quickly.) frumos (beautifully) - Scrie frumos. (He/She writes beautifully.) Many adverbs of manner are formed by adding -e to the feminine singular form of an adjective (e.g., lentă (slow, fem.) - lente (slowly)). Adverbs of Place (Adverbe de loc): These answer the question "Where?" (Unde?). aici (here) - Vino aici! (Come here!) acolo (there) - El este acolo. (He is there.) sus (up) - Priviți sus. (Look up.) jos (down) - Mingea este jos. (The ball is down.) afară (outside) - Mergem afară. (We are going outside.) Adverbs of Time (Adverbe de timp): These answer the question "When?" (Când?). acum (now) - Pleacă acum. (He/She is leaving now.) ieri (yesterday) - Am văzut-o ieri. (I saw her yesterday.) mâine (tomorrow) - Ne vedem mâine. (We'll see each other tomorrow.) mereu (always) - El zâmbește mereu. (He always smiles.) niciodată (never) - Nu am fost niciodată acolo. (I have never been there.) Adverbs of Quantity (Adverbe de cantitate): These answer the question "How much?" (Cât?). mult (much, a lot) - Vorbește mult. (He/She talks a lot.) puțin (little, a bit) - Mănâncă puțin. (He/She eats little.) foarte (very) - Este foarte frumos. (It is very beautiful.) prea (too) - Este prea cald. (It is too hot.) Position of Adverbs In Romanian, adverbs typically come after the verb they modify: Vorbesc rar. (I speak rarely.) However, adverbs modifying adjectives or other adverbs usually come before them: Este foarte bine. (It is very good.) Alerg prea repede. (I run too fast.) Important Notes: Unlike adjectives, adverbs are invariable. They do not change their form to agree in gender or number with the word they modify. Some words can function as both adjectives and adverbs, depending on their position and role in the sentence. For example, "tare" can mean "hard/strong" (adjective) or "hard/loudly" (adverb). Un lemn tare. (A hard wood.) - Adjective Cântă tare. (He/She sings loudly.) - Adverb Understanding adverbs is crucial for adding detail and nuance to your Romanian sentences. Practice identifying them and using them correctly!
