It is one of Poland's most well-known ancient districts, and it served as the political heart of the country from 1038 until King Sigismund III Vasa moved his court to Warsaw in 1596. The entire mediaeval old town was one of the first places to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as Cracow's Historic Centre. The old town is also one of Poland's recognised national Historic Monuments (Pomnik historii), declared in the first round on September 16, 1994, and monitored by Poland's National Heritage Board. In Polish, the Old Town is known as Stare Miasto. Although it covers a larger area than the Old Town, it is part of the city's first administrative district, which is also known as "Stare Miasto."
