The DBX delivers the type of performance most people expect from this storied sports car brand. An updated version of the turbocharged V8 that's in the Vantage and DB11 supercars powers the DBX. The engine produces 542 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque and can blast the DBX from 0 to 60 mph in a claimed 4.3 seconds — not too shabby for a five-seat SUV. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard. The DBX has an all-wheel drive, an active center differential and a limited-slip rear differential. These help send torque to the appropriate wheel in low-traction situations, whether front to back or left rear to right rear. Of the vehicle's six drive modes, two of them are for off-road scenarios. And the DBX has an adaptive air suspension that can raise the ride height up to 9.25 inches of ground clearance if necessary. For what it's worth, the DBX has a maximum towing capacity of 5,940 pounds. All the right materials are present inside the DBX, with wood, metal, leather and available faux-suede trim throughout the cabin. A 12.3-inch driver information display, sourced from partner Daimler AG, presents a high-definition digital instrument cluster. The dashboard is highlighted by a 10.25-inch screen controlled by a dial in the center console. Standard features include Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree surround view, and ambient lighting available in 64 colors. The DBX is aimed squarely at the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne Turbo. These models are defined by their exceptional build quality, powerful engines and, in some cases, surprising utility. The trouble these super SUVs sometimes run into is packing the performance expected of their badges into a bulky, upright package. I'm curious to see whether the DBX will circumvent those pitfalls or fall prey to them. Price Range... Starts at $189,900 2020 Bentley Bentayga (Overview) The 2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 augmented by a 94-kW electric motor fed by a rechargeable 17.3-kWh battery pack. As with the current V8 and W12, the hybrid powertrain drives all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The combined output between the two power sources stands at 443 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. And even though the hybrid is less powerful than either of the Bentayga's uprated engines, it delivers acceleration that is still very quick considering its hefty weight. The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid uses the same powertrain and provides a sportier driving experience but doesn't offer the same level of luxury and refinement. The tradeoff is that its starting price is roughly half that of the Bentley. The Land Rover Range Rover Hybrid is more in line with Bentley's upscale ethos, but it has too many drawbacks to recommend. The Bentayga in general also competes with the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, which provides unsurpassed levels of comfort and luxury but has a base price double that of the Bentley. And the Rolls-Royce has no powertrains aside from the immensely powerful V12. With 17.1 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats, the Bentayga Hybrid has the same cargo volume as its non-hybrid counterpart — maximum cargo room is unaffected thanks to the battery pack's location beneath the cargo floor. Bentayga Hybrid offers plenty of legroom in both rows, and the headroom is similarly generous. Five seats are standard. But buyers looking for the ultimate in backseat comfort can specify a four-seat configuration with power-adjustable rear seats and a center console. The 2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is the only ultra-luxury plug-in vehicle on the market, and it's a good one. Smooth power delivery and a useful EV range give this SUV a modicum of eco cred. The advanced powertrain and nearly immaculate interior mean this is anything but a budget Bentley. Even if buyers aren't overly concerned with fuel prices, the ability to plug in every night and reduce the number of trips to the gas station is enticing.
